Name
Tanya Evanson's Bothism
- Experimental Sufi
Description
Enjoy a double bill of experimental poetry, music, and film that explores the spaces between worlds. We begin with Tanya Evanson — poet, whirling dervish, and director of the Banff Centre’s Spoken Word residency — as she presents Bothism: A Sufi Experiment.
Bothism is the name of a short video by Evanson and the name of her first published poetry collection, an experimental Sufi text. The two come together on stage for a performance that reimagines sama — the central act of devotion for a whirling dervish, and also the Arabic world for listening. Evanson will be both absent and present on stage, meditating on sorrow and joy, day and night, the threshold between worlds. She will be joined by Saeed Kamjoo (gheychak & kamancheh), Ziya Tabassian (percussion), and Farzad Attar Jafari (Sufi whirling).
The evening’s second feature performance is from Kaie Kellough and Jason Sharp — a music/spoken word/poetry duo. Together they will explore the liminal space between syllables, sounds, words, and rhythm with live video accompaniment.
