Don’t miss your chance to see Juno Award winner Gordon Grdina and his new band, The Marrow, performing a mesmerizing cross of Arabic maqam, Persian dastgah, and avant-garde jazz. Their border-blurring melodies are delicate yet powerful, connected to the past yet tuned to the future.
Vancouver-based Grdina is renowned for his explorations on the oud and guitar. He brings together two mainstays of New York City’s jazz-scene — Mark Feldman on the violin, and Hank Roberts on cello — along with Vancouver-based percussionist Hamin Honari on the daf (frame drum) and the tombak (a goblet shaped drum). The Marrow’s first album Ejdeha, released last June, was a critical success hailed by All About Jazz as “a compelling work of contemporary and ancient telepathy.”
Opening for The Marrow are innovative Montreal-based oud player Nazih Borish and acclaimed Toronto-born bassist Roberto Occhipinti.
